What is diesel engine oil?

Designed for internal combustion engines, engine oil is a lubricating fluid that reduces friction and wear on moving components, helping to cool the engine and clean it from deposits. It is made up of base oils enhanced with various additives, such as anti-wear and detergents and is designed to provide lubrication over a wide range of temperatures.

Engine oils are a blend of two components – base oils and additives. All our lubricants are blended to meet all regulation standards, as well as the application, whether it’s an engine, transmission or hydraulic oil.

Types of engine oil base oils

Engine oil base oils are broadly classified into three categories: mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. Each one has various characteristics and suitability for different engines and driving conditions.

Mineral

Mineral engine oil is the most basic form of engine oil – it’s a non-synthetic oil derived from crude oil (i.e. not from a blend of lab-derived chemicals). It’s a natural, non-toxic and biodegradable product that prolongs the life of your engine, and is well suited for older vehicles and motorcycles.

  • Affordable
  • Suitable for older engines

Synthetic

A type of oil designed to provide the highest performance and protection. It’s made from a variety of synthetic materials, including esters and polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and undergoes extensive processing to remove impurities and create uniform molecules, providing superior lubrication and efficiency.

It’s often used in high-performance cars and those that require extended oil change intervals.

  • Superior protection
  • Excellent performance in extreme temperatures
  • Longer intervals between oil changes

Semi-synthetic

Semi-synthetic engine oil is a blend of synthetic and mineral oils, hence its other name -synthetic blend oil. It’s designed to provide improved performance compared to mineral oil whilst also being more cost-effective than fully synthetic oil.

  • Better protection and performance than mineral oil
  • More affordable than fully synthetic oil

Importance of regular engine oil changes

Dirty or low-quality oil can damage engines or degrade over time, which is why regular oil changes are essential for maintaining engine health. At Crown Oil we supply a huge range of engine oils across the UK with rapid delivery times, ensuring we can meet the needs of our customers.

Choosing the right engine oil

Deciding on the right motor oil depends on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle, the manufacturer’s recommendations and the driving conditions.
