Switch to industrial heating oil (IHO) for commercial boilers
As businesses become more dependent on heating systems and commercial boilers during the cold winter months, careful management is needed to avoid heating costs spiralling out of control. Have you heard of the fuel industrial heating oil?
If you use diesel in commercial boiler applications, you’re probably wondering if there are ways to reduce your heating costs.
Well, you’re in luck…
Introducing your spring saver… industrial heating oil
When businesses discover IHO, they never look back as they experience fast and stable cost savings, as well as a reduced environmental impact.
In fact, 20% of our red diesel customers made the switch to IHO for use in their commercial boilers in 2018 and are already reaping the benefits.
What is industrial heating oil?
Industrial heating oil (IHO) is a cost-effective drop-in replacement for anyone who uses class D gas oil for commercial boiler applications to generate heat. As its name suggests, industrial heating oil is specifically designed for use solely in heating applications.
IHO is strictly prohibited for use in both on and off-road vehicles or any static engines. So unlike diesel, it cannot be used in agricultural or construction equipment and machinery.
How is industrial heating oil made?
Similar to the way other fuels are produced, heating oil is made from petroleum through a process that heats crude oil to high temperatures in a fractionating column.
IHO is also similar to kerosene and is often used as an alternative, with the only substantial difference being that it condenses at a higher temperature of around 250°C – 350°C during production.
What is industrial heating oil used for?
IHO is a commercially appealing alternative to diesel. It’s specifically intended for use in a heating capacity in large open spaces such as factories, warehouses, colleges and schools.
It can be used in a wide range of commercial boilers, dryers and heaters, whilst preserving heat output and performance.
How can industrial heating oil save my business money?
Our aim was to create a product that’s exactly the same as gas oil in terms of its physical properties. As well as being a low-priced replacement for diesel, IHO provides a number of added-value benefits that can help to save your business money:
You get the same heat output as diesel but for less money
IHO has the same calorific value (burning characteristics) as diesel (9520 kcal/kg), which means it doesn’t compromise on heating output or performance. It produces the same amount of energy, or in fact, slightly more.
IHO contains multifunctional additives that protect your heating system
IHO contains additives to compensate for the reduced levels of sulphur to boost lubricity. We also add an array of additives, so while it powers your boilers, it also cleans your tanks and storage lines, saving money in the long run. The additives also reduce emissions, keeping burner side deposits to a minimum and reducing your carbon footprint.
IHO can be used year-round (unlike diesel)
Diesel differs in grade for seasonal use, meaning it has summer and winter variants. So when the cold weather sets in, any summer grade gas oil that remains in the tank is at risk of wax crystal formation which can block pipes and cause fuel blockages. This can, in turn, cause a heating system to shut down, leading to a very cold business!
IHO has a low CFPP/pour point (-25oC), giving it consistent year-round performance. So, unlike diesel, there’s no need to empty tanks of summer grade fuel for the cold weather as there’s no chance of it freezing in your tank.

Fully quality assured product
We’re fully in control of what components we use in IHO – every component is quality assured before we use it in the blend. All of our products are virgin sources which means there’s no waste product blended in.

Switching heating oil will cause zero disruption to your heating provision
IHO is a drop-in replacement fuel, so there’s no need to empty your tanks of diesel beforehand as IHO can be added to existing diesel stocks.
It’s fully miscible with gas oil too, which means that you don’t need to make any modifications to your burner to make the switch!
Is industrial heating oil cheaper in summer?
Industrial heating oil is a relatively cost-effective fuel anyway, but during a time of high demand, such as during the cold winter months or in an emergency, it can cost much more.
By purchasing heating oil during the warmer months when demand is lower, you will also benefit from comparatively lower prices than making the switch when demand is high.
